Microsoft has reached that point where it needs to update and change, and the big question is whether the new CEO Satya Nadella has the necessary vision and leadership to make it happen, according to BusinessWeek, Feb 4.
Industry analyst Jeff Kagan offers comment.
“I hope Satya Nadella has the vision and ability to help Microsoft change into the kind of company todays marketplace needs. Microsoft going forward has to be a very different company in order to see continued success. Even though they have the largest customer base, that base is frightened about what it has seen recently.” Says Tech analyst Jeff Kagan.
“We should know pretty quickly whether Nadella is the right choice. I hope he is. There was nothing wrong with working on Windows 8 for the future. That’s innovative. Early adopters love it. What was wrong was forcing all their customers down this new path before they were ready. This is typical Microsoft, granted, but it didn’t hurt them in the past because there was little competition. Today that’s changing. Competition is growing in a variety of ways. Microsoft must recognize this and change the way they interact with the customer if they are going to succeed going forward.” Says technology analyst Kagan.
“If the average Microsoft customer doesn’t like Windows 8 and is concerned about tomorrow, what should be done first?” Asks Principal analyst Kagan.
“First order of business for Nadella is to calm the enormous customer base. Second is to let the customer choose the operating system they prefer, whether that be Windows 7 or 8. Third, they must continue to improve Windows 7 and continue to innovate with Windows 8. However do not pull anything off the market. Let the customer choose on their own time frame. Don’t force them.” Says Kagan.
Microsoft frightened the marketplace with Windows 8. Most don’t like Windows 8 and much prefer Windows 7. So Microsoft should have kept both in the market and give the customer the choice when they walk into the store. This typical approach was so heavy handed, but typical Microsoft. Yesterday they could get away with it because there were no options. Today there are options and tomorrow there will be more. So it’s important to have the new understanding of how the marketplace has changed. Hopefully the new CEO will have that understanding.
“The problem was Microsoft was always focused first on the investor. That was a mistake, but they grew because they owned the marketplace. That is changing now. So now they must start to focus on the customer first. Can Microsoft focus on the customer going forward? That’s the million dollar question. We’ll have to wait and see.” Says Kagan.
