Los Angeles (PRWEB) November 11, 2008 -- On Tuesday, October 21st, 2008, JoinTheDot™ hit the streets of Los Angeles for their What's Your Message to the Next President? campaign. Visiting a range of locations throughout the city, they captured the hopes of the people in preparation for the November 4th presidential election.
The messages that have been coming into JoinTheDot's website become part of a unique work of art-in-the-making. Two unique presidential portraits are being created for the project using millions of hand-drawn dots. People sign up for a free dot in the portrait of their favorite candidate, and their messages are attached. This unique method of art known as pointillism uses millions of tiny hand-drawn dots to create one larger image. Together, the voices of the people make up "the big picture."
JoinTheDot™, a partner of Rock the Vote and legendary event organizer, Ken Kragen, teamed up with their sponsor American Airlines for JoinTheDot™ Day, a day that would bring the portraits into the real world to capture the hopes, dreams and experiences of the American people. Beginning the day at the Los Angeles International Airport's American Airlines terminal, JoinTheDot™ quickly became an instant attraction, where dozens of people waited in line to express their message to the next president. Each message was unique, discussing such matters as education, health care and the environment. As each person spoke, the voice of the people became stronger.
After leaving LAX, JoinTheDot™, went to hear a new voice: the voice of the youth at Garfield Senior High School in the Bell Gardens area of Los Angeles. The largely Hispanic group gave both riveting and emotional messages. Addressing a range of issues, from education and immigration to the environment and same sex marriage, the students opened up about their own hardships. One student discussed the lack of desks, chairs and books at the school while another expressed sorrow over a teenage friend who had passed away due to a lack of health care. One particularly strong message was from a young man who said, "Some of my friends are undocumented and I just feel bad that the way I can do it, they can't. I think we should give them a chance". Throughout JoinTheDot's visit, there were both tears and laughter, showing that this group of soon-to-be voters will represent a new perspective in the upcoming election.
Another stop was the Reach Back LA community center in Watts, an area greatly afflicted with gang violence and poverty. At the center, a group of individuals of all ages came out to express their hopes for the next president. One 12 year old boy said "Obama doesn't focus on McCain, he focuses on when he becomes president, what is he going to do," while others discussed heavier issues such as the results of the immigration laws in their community - crime, poverty and gang violence.
Additional stops included 24 Hour Fitness in Century City, Grauman's Chinese Theater, and Canter's Deli. The day went off without a glitch, while providing limitless insight into the voice of the people.
Celebrity artist, David Ilan, traveled with JoinTheDot™ to physically put each individual's dot into the presidential portraits of Barack Obama or John McCain. The Smithsonian museum is in discussions with JoinTheDot™ to display the works of art following the election.
JoinTheDot™ will continue to bring together millions of people after the election to participate in the creation of the winning candidate's presidential portrait. The work of art will be an enduring freeze-frame of the hopes, dreams and experiences of the American people during this historic election.
