In the wake of the centenary of the first World War, author Justin C. Vovk releases his engaging new non-fiction history, “Imperial Requiem: Four Royal Women and the Fall of the Age of Empires” (published by iUniverse).
“Imperial Requiem” connects the stories of four indomitable female monarchs of the early 20th century: Empress Augusta Victoria of Germany, Queen Mary of the United Kingdom, Tsarina Alexandra of Russia, and Empress Zita of Austria. As World War I rages on, the four monarchs face uncertainty, danger, and rebellion.
Augusta Victoria and Mary become symbols of strength and commitment as they stand firmly behind their husbands during the war. Meanwhile, Alexandra fears for her husband and children as the Russian people begin revolting. In Austria, Zita keeps her head held high as she and her family are exiled from the country.
Vovk’s work blends primary sources such as letters, diary entries, and interviews, with secondary sources in an effort to tell these women’s stories in an authentic voice. His aim is to capture the spirit of these four great women and present an accurate depiction of their lives and their tumultuous worlds.
“This book gives a human – and often forgotten – face to the Great War,” Vovk says. “Its themes of family, love, and sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds resonate with people.”
