San Diego, CA and Spring Lake, MI (PRWEB) September 27, 2012
The County of San Diego has completed the Campus Center Building at the County Operations Center with a 7,500-square foot green roof. The LiveRoof® Hybrid Green Roof System from LiveRoof, LLC (Spring Lake, Mich.) was selected for the project. Florasource, Ltd. (San Clemente, Calif.) and Native Sons Wholesale Nursery, Inc. (Arroyo Grande, Calif.) advised the County on plant selection and grew the green roof plants in the system’s modules, which were installed in June 2012 by the Southern California unit of ValleyCrest Landscape Companies (San Diego, Calif.).
The County Operations Center, located at 5510 Overland Avenue, replaced an outdated cluster of inefficient buildings. The new campus capitalizes on Kearny Mesa's central geographic location to provide easily accessible government services for the public. The physical campus demonstrates the County's commitment to a sustainable development and green building. The green roof on the Campus Center Building greens up the outdoor roof deck area adjacent to the cafeteria and provides a view of green space from the surrounding buildings as well. In addition, the green roof reduces stormwater runoff and shades and insulates the building. It contributes to LEED® certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The roof area is open to the public Monday through Friday within the hours of the overall County Operations Center campus, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
“The entire project team agreed on the selection of LiveRoof for the project,” said Jeff Redlitz, project manager, County of San Diego. “Based on our research and evaluations, it has a track record of reliability.”
“In choosing plants for the project, we considered the regional climate and assessed the specific microclimate of the site. We recommended plants that can withstand intense sunlight and thrive despite summer heat spikes and drying winds,” said David Fross, horticulturalist and owner, Native Sons Wholesale Nursery. “The plant palette features two sedum blends, accented with a non-invasive, warm-season grass.”
“We had completely planted the LiveRoof modules with regionally adapted, locally grown plants, already mature and flourishing, before we delivered the system for installation,” said Tom Hawkins, co-owner and president of Florasource, Ltd. “Establishing a green roof with full-grown plants ready for the rigors of the rooftop environment improves immediate success, promotes long-term sustainability, and minimizes maintenance requirements.”
