River Runners, a whitewater rafting company in Colorado with locations in Buena Vista and Canon City, offers upgrade option of ‘thrill rafts’ for whitewater rafting trips on the Arkansas River, now through Labor Day, 2012.
The thrill raft upgrade is $60 on top of the regular price per person of an Arkansas River rafting trip with River Runners and up to four people can ride in the boat depending on weight restrictions, according to Travis Hochard, operations manager at River Runners.
“This is a great way for thrill-seekers to experience low water river running in Colorado this season,” Hochard explained. “The rapids feel much bigger in the smaller boats and guides can navigate them down chutes and channels that would be un-runnable in a standard sized raft.”
Hochard said the maximum number of participants for a thrill raft is four, but that this number could be less if the total weight exceeds 600 pounds.
“Participants should be in good shape and agile,” Hochard said. “You need to be able to shift your weight around quickly and have good balance to avoid falling out of the raft or capsizing.”
Hochard said that River Runners will continue running regular sized rafts throughout the season, which is the best option for the majority of people, especially families with children.
“This is an upgrade for people looking for a challenge,” Hochard said. “Our standard whitewater rafting trips are still more appropriate for most people.”
River Runners celebrates 40 years of whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River in 2012.
