New Orleans, LA (PRWEB) September 18, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans’ School of Nursing announced the selected winners of five scholarships of $4,500. The students entered the school’s top-ranked online Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program when classes began on August 20, 2012.
The awarded scholarships are the second installment in a series celebrating Loyola’s centennial and its 33-year history of providing world-class higher education to America’s nurses in a healthcare marketplace struggling with increasing patient demand and a significant shortage of nurse leaders. Candidates applying for the scholarship were asked to submit a written essay explaining what nursing meant to them, and how an MSN with a specialization in Health Care Systems Management would benefit or help further their career goals. After review by the School of Nursing’s program director and faculty, the following five candidates were selected to receive $4,500 individual scholarships to begin their online studies:
Fall 2012 Scholarship Recipients:
1. Heather Dopps, RN, UCLA Health Systems
2. Angela Gauthier, RN Clinical Supervisor, Ochsner Medical Center
3. Alex Khavash, ICU RN, Maimonides Medical Center
4. Lisa Lorenzo, Nurse Educator/Rep, Astra Zeneca
5. Claire Mortimer, Cardiac RN-BC, INOVA Fairfax Hospital IHVI
“One of the themes I was pleased to notice in this group of submissions was the motivation each individual had to impact their greater communities and find new, innovative ways to contribute to the development of the healthcare system,” says Jane Savage, associate professor of nursing at Loyola and coordinator of the online Master of Science in Nursing program and Healthcare Systems Management specialization. “An important characteristic of nurses taking on leadership roles is the passion to influence positive environments for patients and those working directly with them. That quality was evident in all the submissions which made selecting just five candidates extremely challenging."
