Unusual Ecommerce Survey Produces Profit Making Results

A two-part survey recently undertaken by online post office Private Box Ltd has discovered a unique sales barrier for ecommerce operations: not displaying a physical address. It may even be costing some businesses big bucks.

Wellington, New Zealand (PRWEB) May 6, 2009 -- A two-part survey recently undertaken by online post office Private Box Ltd has discovered a unique sales barrier for ecommerce operations: not displaying a physical address. It may even be costing some businesses big bucks. The first part of the survey involved monitoring the habits of 4000 online shoppers over a three-month period. The survey found that at least 35% of them bought only from sites displaying physical contact details.

"Online shoppers want to know they can contact the business they are buying from as easily as if it were a retail store in their local shopping mall," says Steven Morey, Director of Private Box. "Despite the internet's part in our daily existence, consumers are still cautious, suspicious even. Displaying an address appears to be a psychological thing. It provides a sense of security for the 'what if something goes wrong scenario'."

The second part of the Private Box Ltd survey, spread over three years, involved measuring the sales results produced by an ecommerce website that listed a physical address and comparing them with results when the address was not given. Statistics very similar to those in the first part of the survey were obtained.

"The evidence produced during the survey clearly indicates displaying a physical address (on an ecommerce site) increases sales by at least a third," says Steven. "Private Box Ltd began this part of the survey in January 2006, completely unaware of what the results would be. It really has proved how small details can seriously affect profits."

A small part of Private Box's electronic-mail service includes providing a specialised 'physical address to rent'. Many ecommerce businesses use this as an 'address for service,' and it can be displayed on websites to provide the appearance of a physical street address.
