Yardley, PA (PRWEB) August 02, 2012
McCann Associates, a leader in the deployment of high-stakes formative and diagnostic assessments for professional and educational purposes, is proud to announce the accreditation of one of its client’s programs by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters is the first and only organization certifying healthcare interpreters to receive this accreditation, truly setting the standard for the rest of the country.
“NCCA accreditation awarded to CCHI is an outstanding achievement,” said Fred Hobby, former CCHI Commissioner. “CCHI is now the gold standard by which all other interpreter services programs will be measured.”
CCHI is a professional certification organization acting in the public interest by establishing and enforcing education, examination, experience and ethics requirements for certification of healthcare interpreters. The agency received NCCA accreditation for its Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ – Spanish Certification program, which includes an oral performance exam produced by McCann.
“We know how rigorous and demanding the NCCA application process can be,” said Keith Webster, President of McCann Associates, “and that is why we are so proud of CCHI and delighted they are working with us to deliver the Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ and Associate Healthcare Interpreter™ tests.”
The CHI™ examinations contain four types of items: audio response, where an item is played and the test-taker must interpret what he heard; simultaneous response, where the test-taker is listening and simultaneously interpreting what he hears; sight translation, where the test-taker reads a passage and records his response; and multiple choice, where the test-taker must select the most appropriate response.
“This is the first time that anyone has attempted to do an oral interpreting exam via computer-based testing and succeeded,” continued Webster. “It’s truly a landmark undertaking, and we’re really proud of our assessment technology.”
Through its association with test executers McCann, CCHI currently offers certification in three languages: Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish. McCann’s online testing platform helps CCHI offer these exams nationwide, expanding its breadth of ability to administer exams.
“McCann’s technology assisted in improving the overall administration of exams. We’re now able to offer this national certification to more people, in more areas of the country,” said Mara Youdelman, CCHI Commissioner. “McCann has certainly made the testing more efficient.”
Competent healthcare interpreters are essential to ensure that all patients, regardless of ethnicity or English language proficiency, receive high-quality care. In order to pursue the reduction of health disparities through effective communication, McCann and CCHI anticipate working together to develop more exams in other languages in the future.

About Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters
CCHI, a 501(c)(6) organization whose mission is to develop and direct a comprehensive credentialing program for healthcare interpreters, brings together representatives from national and regional non-profit interpreting associations, language companies, community-based organizations, educational institutions, healthcare providers, and advocates for LEP individuals. CCHI’s Associate Healthcare Interpreter™ (AHI™) credential is the entry point into professional certification for healthcare interpreters regardless of the language(s) in which they interpret. Once a healthcare interpreter passes the AHI™ exam they are eligible to sit for the Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ (CHI™) examination, an oral performance exam that tests consecutive and simultaneous interpreting plus sight translation in one or more languages in which they interpret. The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) granted accreditation to CCHI in June 2012 for demonstrating compliance with the NCCA Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Program.
