In his new book, “The Goose Creek Bridge: Gateway to Sacred Places” (published by AuthorHouse), author Michael J. Heitzler, Ed.D. explores the fundamental characteristics and epochal transitions of Saint James, Goose Creek Parish, a historically important neighborhood in American history.

Comprehensive and carefully documented, “The Goose Creek Bridge” divulges the social and political significance of a small section of South Carolina through the ages by introducing local personalities such as the Goose Creek Men who were seen as the tip of the spear for the British empire in North America and who impacted prevailing policies during a major turning point in colonial history.

“The characters and stories in the book are vibrant and the lessons are transferable to many other places,” Heitzler says. “Nuances of everyday life in Goose Creek illuminate the relevant aspects of the varying eras from the Carolina frontier to the emerging institutions of the old south in the twentieth century.”

Heitzler, a retired educator and current mayor of Goose Creek, set out to describe the history of the local community after realizing part of the story was missing.

“Local history,” he notes, “is a window to a wider world reflected by better known places, people and players.”
