For the Circles necklace, I've applied crochet to contemporary materials to create a piece of modern, wearable statement jewelry.

Contemporary jewelry artist Christi Schimpke, founder of eco friendly designer jewelry line Minabea (http://www.minabea.com) will showcase her "Circle" and "Gold Sun" necklaces at GBK’s Luxury Gift Lounge for the 2013 Academy Awards. The Gift Lounge takes place February 22-23, 2013 in Los Angeles, California.
Christi Schimpke, designer/owner at Minabea Jewelry, hand-fabricated the Circle necklace, which has matching earrings, using crochet. The necklace is composed of five circles of varying sizes which Schimpke then filled with crocheted sterling silver wire and pink, grey, ecru and white freshwater pearls. Completing the set are matching earrings of two smaller crocheted sterling silver circles and freshwater pearls.
The handcrafted necklace and earring set reflects Schimpke’s appreciation for the circle shape and her desire to commemorate her grandmother Minabea, a devoted practitioner of the needle arts, especially crochet.
“Minabea used her crochet skills to make functional clothing and items for the home,” remarked Schimpke. “My goal was to apply this construction technique to contemporary materials; in this case, fine silver wire, to create modern, wearable statement jewelry. I think she would have loved the visually engaging, abstract look of this set and she definitely would have appreciated the twist on tradition.”
In addition to the Circle Necklace display piece, Schimpke created 100 “Gold Sun” pendant necklaces for the celebrity gift bags. Each pendant is a 24k gold sun that sits in the center with a clear or black crystal faceted drop. The pendant hangs on a dark, waxed adjustable cord. Schimpke hand-fabricated each pendant using a time-consuming Korean gilding technique known as Keum-Boo, which involves applying thin sheets of 24k gold to sterling silver to create silver-gilt (similar to Vermeil).
In creating the necklaces, Schimpke had a dual purpose. She wanted to honor the positive, life-giving aspects of the sun and at the same time celebrate the iconic Oscar statuette and the ‘silver screen’ that has come to symbolize the cinema industry. “The Keum-Boo technique echoes the 24k gold finish of the Oscar statuette and the silver of the ‘silver screen’”, noted Schimpke. “The bonding of the two metals reflects the way in which the Oscar statuette has become the very face of this ‘king’ of all award events.”
