Potential Mirena IUD lawsuits are actively being evaluated by the Mirena side effects lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP. Mirena is an intrauterine device inserted directly into the uterus to prevent pregnancy, where it may remain in place for up to five years.    A number of Mirena IUD lawsuits have already been filed in Superior Court in New Jersey, prompting Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the manufacturer of the device, to seek designation of the cases as a “Mass Tort” for centralized management in Middlesex County. *

Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who have been injured by dangerous drugs and defective medical devices, is currently offering free and confidential Mirena IUD lawsuit reviews on behalf of women who allegedly suffered serious Mirena injuries, including:

  •     Device migration
  •     Embedment in the uterine wall
  •     Uterine perforations
  •     Infertility
  •     Infection
  •     Intestinal perforations or obstruction
  •     Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Mirena IUD Side Effects
Mirena is a small, t-shaped, plastic device that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider, and works to prevent pregnancy by releasing a low dose of levonorgestrel (a synthetic progestin hormone) directly into the uterus. Mirena was approved in 2000 as a contraceptive, and its approval was expanded in 2009 for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding for women who desire to use an IUD as contraception. According to the FDA, Mirena side effects may include: ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg grows outside the uterus); intrauterine pregnancy (a pregnancy with Mirena in place); group A streptococcal sepsis; an infection called pelvic inflammatory disease; embedment of the device in the uterine wall; and perforation of the uterine wall or cervix.**

In 2009, the FDA issued a warning letter to Bayer after finding that its Mirena promotions overstated the efficacy of the device and minimized its risks. Among other things, the FDA took issue with marketing claims touting Mirena’s purported ability to improve a woman’s sex life and help her “look and feel great.” According to the FDA Mirena warning letter, at least 5% of Mirena IUD users reported decreased libido in clinical trials.***

Young women who used the Mirena IUD and suffered device migration, uterine perforations or other severe Mirena side effects may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
