Continuent's Tungsten Stack Gives MySQL Better Replication

Continuent Responds to Monty Widenius' Challenge and Provides Advanced Master-Slave Replication to Scale-out MySQL Applications

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) September 3, 2008 -- Continuent, Inc., a leading provider of commercial open source solutions for database replication and scale-out, today announced an advanced replication for MySQL® with its Tungsten Replicator. Continuent Tungsten™ is an open source stack, a collection of integrated projects, for database scale-out using commodity hardware.

MySQL's built-in database replication has been a key component of horizontal scaling solutions for many years. However, it also has a number of limitations that are well-known in the MySQL community. At the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo, Monty Widenius, founder and original developer of MySQL, highlighted key replication weaknesses (http://www.scribd.com/doc/2575733/The-future-of-MySQL-The-Project) such as:

  • Replication is not fail safe
  • No synchronous options
  • No checking consistency option
  • Setup and resync of slave is complicated
  • Single-thread on the slave
  • No multi-master
  • Only InnodDB synchronizes with the replication (binary) log.

As a longstanding MySQL partner and an expert in high-end replication solutions, Continuent has taken steps to answer Monty's challenge and go beyond it as well. The initial feature set for Continuent Tungsten Replicator includes:

  • Simple set-up procedure
  • Proper handling of master failover in presence of multiple slaves (for high availability)
  • Master/slave replication of one, some, or all databases
  • MySQL statement replication
  • Checksums on replication events
  • Table consistency check mechanism
  • Runs on Linux, Solaris and Windows.

Continuent Tungsten roadmap includes:

  • Graphical Management Tools
  • Oracle® support
  • PostgreSQL support
  • MySQL row replication
  • Heterogeneous replication (for example MySQL to Oracle and vice versa)
  • Multi-master via bi-directional replication with conflict resolution
  • Semi-synchronous replication
  • Parallel update on slaves to increase performance
  • Proxying support to reduce or eliminate application changes.

The Continuent Tungsten architecture is database-neutral, which means that the same framework supports a number of different databases. This is convenient for users, who can use a single product to replicate data on different database types. It is also a cornerstone of heterogeneous replication, which supports data integration projects between MySQL and other databases such as Oracle.

"As a MySQL Gold Partner, we have been offering synchronous master-master replication solution for years," said Eero Teerikorpi, CEO at Continuent. "With MySQL being widely deployed for web-tier applications, a consistent message from our mutual customers has been the need for better master-slave replication than current solutions. Scalability and reliability with seamless failover and no performance loss are absolutely crucial for them. Tungsten delivers this."
