The Bayside Local Chapter had a successful launch when members and guests gathered together June 18th for a professional networking meeting at the North Shore Diner in Bayside. Since then, the Chapter has been steadily growing and now boasts nearly 20 members. The group met twice in the same location to network and discuss the Chapter’s goals.
At the NAPW Bayside Local Chapter launch meeting, Chapter President Celestina Akbar welcomed members and guests, all of whom enjoyed the North Shore Diner’s delicious food and refreshments.
“NAPW Bayside Chapter is growing and now has nearly 20 members on the Chapter roster on the NAPW website,” said Celestina. “There are about 285 members in the Flushing and Bayside areas and the Bayside Chapter would like to meet every woman at a meeting this year.”
During the launch meeting, members and guests agreed that the Chapter should become involved with charity work and discussed a number of charities available through care.org/about/index/asp.
“We will support a charity or charities through events, fundraisers, and volunteer efforts,” said Celestina. “We expect to have a guest speaker at the September Chapter meeting who will discuss diabetes advocacy.”
One of the Chapter’s goals is to recruit two new members to join the Bayside Chapter each month. Chapter meetings will be organized by the Chapter President. It was agreed that the group will meet once a month, most likely at the North Shore Diner, although member Christina Shonfeld mentioned that she may be able to reserve a conference room in her office building if necessary for future meetings.
Members and guests at the launch meeting included: Laura Spadafora, who has numerous opportunities at All State Insurance Company for agents who are interested in insurance products and sales; Christina Shonfeld, President of Franchise Forward; Nancy Salvia, Traffic Enforcement Agent; and Gloria Mueller, Chief Executive Officer of Gloria Mueller Consultancy Services who brings experience from the United Nations and UNICEF.
Bayside Local Chapter members and guests met again on July 16th and August 20th for networking meetings. At the July meeting, the Chapter President led the group in a discussion about ‘The Sandwich Generation,’ a generation of people who give care to their children and their parents at the same time. Celestina, a Consultant with RHI, introduced her new book, Alzheimer’s Disease: A Growing Health Care Issue Among the Elderly.
A number of members were elected to the Bayside Local Chapter Planning Committee. Melissa Del Toro, a new member who arrived from Dallas, Texas, is now the Chapter’s Event Planner. Hope Gilson, a new member who attended her first Chapter meeting this summer and Gloria Mueller, who attended the Bayside Chapter launch, were also elected to the Planning Committee.
