The NAPW El Paso, TX Local Chapter was successfully launched on October 2nd with a professional networking Meet & Greet event. During the meeting, members and guests had the opportunity to network, set goals for the Chapter including future meeting topics and guest speakers, and discuss the benefits of social media.
NAPW El Paso, TX Local Chapter President Guadalupe Villarreal welcomed all to the Meet & Greet launch and encouraged everyone to network with one another for the first 30 minutes before she officially opened the meeting.
“Thank you to all for taking the time out of their busy schedules to attend the El Paso, TX Local Chapter’s official launch meeting,” said Guadalupe.
She then invited attendees to introduce themselves. One by one, members and guests told the group a little bit about themselves, their careers, and their favorite hobbies.
Guadalupe explained the purpose of NAPW and shared some ideas for future guest speakers and the vision for the El Paso, TX Local Chapter, including its involvement with charities such as those that support women who live in shelters, military spouses, and teenage girls. The Chapter President then spoke about the importance of social media and how it could help the Chapter.
“There are so many incentives about running social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn,” said Guadalupe. “It can be such a great marketing tool to make other women aware of the NAPW El Paso, TX Local Chapter.”
Additionally, it was suggested that as the Chapter grows, positions will be open for members to participate and take an even greater role through planning, marketing, and project management. Chapter President Guadalupe then opened the floor to discussion.
One of the guests present at the meeting, Dr. Beth Vivaldi, suggested that doing something to promote education for those women who do not have degrees would be a good cause the Chapter could support. Members and guests agreed and several attendees shared their experiences and challenges trying to get an education and handle other responsibilities at the same time.
To encourage more ideas and suggestions, Guadalupe distributed flash cards for attendees to write down their ideas, expectations, and needs. Some of the ideas for meeting topics and guest speakers were: confidence building, time management, health, resume writing, networking, motivation, finances, how to deal with harassment in the workplace, ethics, goal setting, professional etiquette, how to motivate employees, voice in the workplace, handle rejection, balancing home life with work and school obligations, and stress management and relaxation techniques.
“Dr. Vivaldi’s and the other suggestions were all excellent and we will be reviewing them as we begin planning future Chapter meetings” said the Chapter President. “Dr. Vivaldi was very interested in finding out more about the benefits of becoming an NAPW member which I followed up with in an email to her with information.”
To close the meeting, Guadalupe raffled a coupon for a free meal and three gifts. Dr. Vivaldi who is the director at Webster University generously offered to sponsor everyone’s dinner. A special thank you was sent to her via e-mail the next day.
All five guests who attended the launch meeting expressed their interest in NAPW; they are Brandy, Yvette, Holly, Melissa, and Dr. Beth Vivaldi. Guadalupe will refer them to an NAPW representative for more information.
“The El Paso, TX Local Chapter launch meeting was very successful. All conversations were very positive and productive,” said Guadalupe.
Future meeting dates are set for November 13th and December 11th. The El Paso, TX Chapter President encouraged everyone to invite other women to future meetings.
