NAPW Tulsa, OK Local Chapter Hosted Former News Anchor Cindy Morrison and Kicked-off Purse Drive for Tulsa Nonprofit at July networking meeting

Members and guests of the NAPW Tulsa, OK Local Chapter gathered in July and August for professional networking meetings at the Schusterman Library in Tulsa. At the August 30th meeting, Cindy Morrison, former News Anchor/Investigative Reporter turned Social Media Strategist captivated members and guests with her presentation on SOCIALVENTION, her secret to reinventing herself after corporate downsizing. On July 26th, the Tulsa, OK Chapter hosted Kari Mirabal, a representative from Tulsa Dress for Success, and pledged its support for the foundation by kicking off the ‘Check Your Bag’ purse drive.

NAPW Tulsa, OK Local Chapter President Angie Castleberry welcomed members and guests to the August meeting and reminded all to check out the Tulsa, OK Local Chapter Page on the NAPW website for the latest information.

“I also encourage everyone to ‘Like’ us on Facebook and connect with us on LinkedIn,” Angie told the crowd.

Members and guests were invited to introduce themselves to the crowd and speak about their business or job. Attendees also distributed their business cards and any coupons or samples they had with them to share with the others.

Next, Angie took a few moments to introduce the evening’s guest speaker, Cindy Morrison, former News Anchor and Investigative Reporter from KTUL, Tulsa’s ABC affiliate.

“After more than a decade on Channel 8, Cindy was a victim of corporate downsizing,” said Angie. “But by reinventing herself, she not only survived but is now thriving in an exciting, new career.”

In her presentation to members and guests, Cindy revealed her secret, SOCIALVENTION. By using social media strategy to get her message out, Cindy became a nationally sought-after speaker and her book has sold more copies in the first month than most first-time authors. Now, Cindy coaches entrepreneurs and corporate executives on how to reboot, upgrade, and reinvent.

The key points of Cindy’s presentation were:

•     Be Relevant – use social media, you can’t afford NOT to!
•     Rebrand yourself – when Cindy’s contract was not renewed, everyone still thought of her as a TV Anchor, she had to rebrand herself as a Social Media Strategist.
•     If you're going to use Social Media, and you should, you have to give them a reason to 'Like' your Facebook or Twitter page.
•     You should deliver on what you/your product promises.
•     Ask yourself, why should they 'Like' your page?
•     What makes you different?
•     If you are giving things away, make them things of value (information or financial value).
•     Use social media to make yourself different.
•     Share parts of you that make you different and let people get to know you.
•     Don't be perfect all the time; show your audience how you have mishaps in your business and personal life. It makes you human.
•     Use funny stuff, not too personal.
•     Share things that make you different.
•     You must get people to respond on your site, the way Facebook is set up, if you don’t get people to comment, you lose followers.
•     Get people to talk and open up by asking 'did you know' type questions.
•     Make yourself the expert or appear to be.
•     Take the talk away from selling and just get people to listen to you talk about a particular topic.

At the end of the August meeting, Angie reminded everyone about the on-going ‘Check Your Bag’ purse drive that the Chapter kicked off at its networking meeting in July when Kari Mirabal, a representative from the Tulsa Dress for Success foundation, came to speak to members and guests.

“We are still collecting purses for our charitable partner, Tulsa Dress for Success,” said Angie. “We had 35 purses at the August meeting and we hope to have that many or more at the September 27th Chapter meeting.“

During the July meeting, Kari told the group that Tulsa Dress for Success has suited over 1,500 women. They have a boutique at 11th and Peoria. She encouraged members and guests to participate as a group in the Dress for Success 5K event in June and also invited members and guests to participate in their annual fashion show fundraiser in September.

After a discussion about how they could help their chosen charity, it was decided the Tulsa, OK Local Chapter would hold a ‘Check Your Bag’ campaign. The purse drive would commence August 1st and run until the September 27th Chapter meeting.

“All handbags and monies collected at that time would be turned in. We discussed goal setting and several women committed to collecting a certain number of handbags,” said Angie. “We also spoke about awarding some small prizes for those who met their goals and for the top three contributors.”

In addition to listening to Kari’s presentation and organizing the purse drive, members and guests also had plenty of time to network and get to know one another. Angie encouraged attendees to look at the NAPW website and the Tulsa, OK Chapter Page, for upcoming opportunities and events and to follow the Local Chapter on Facebook and LinkedIn.
