Susan J. Houston is Director, Governance, Public Interest and Special Assistant to the Executive Director at the American Psychological Association (APA), a scientific and professional organization that represents psychologists in the U.S. She has attained the highest level of membership to the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) as a VIP Woman of the Year and has been recognized for outstanding leadership and commitment within her profession.
Ms. Houston has enjoyed a successful career in association administration. For more than 25 years, she has held essential positions at APA and has managed a variety of programs and initiatives. Ms. Houston provides invaluable staff support to key executives within the company, and regularly interacts with APA members and the executive board to ensure the smooth completion of projects including updating and revising APA Guidelines.
With a keen understanding of APA’s vision, Ms. Houston works tirelessly to see it is carried out, applying her multifaceted skills in areas such as continuing professional education, finance, policy development, strategic planning, program development, women’s programs and more. An ability to be flexible and to readily readjust her workload when a particular project suddenly changes direction, has helped to make Ms. Houston a valued employee. “A typical workday for me is one in which I must arrive with the knowledge and acceptance that things could change at any moment,” said Ms. Houston. She is currently working on a set of multicultural guidelines, staffing presidential task force, dissemination projects and diversity training.
Whether taking on additional responsibilities or exploring other options, Ms. Houston is looking forward to a future brimming with opportunity. “My membership in NAPW has offered me several options for not only furthering my career aspirations, but it also made it possible for me to think well beyond anything I could have imagined in terms of future options,” she said.
