Based on the New York Times #1 bestselling memoir 'Rocket Boys' by former NASA engineer Homer Hickam, the movie 'October Sky' was a blockbuster hit on the silver screen, capturing the imagination of international audiences. 'Rocket Boys', upon which this musical is based, is a vivid portrait of the tiny West Virginia mining town of Hickam's youth, evoking a time of innocence and promise, when anything was possible, even in a company town that swallowed its men alive.
This beloved story, one of the most read by high school and middle school students in the USA for the past decade, is now taking flight as ‘Rocket Boys the Musical.’ The Broadway bound production has already won the NY ASCAP/ Disney Musical Theatre workshop, with a stirring soundtrack composed by two-time consecutive ASCAP/Disney Musical Theater award winners. The plays' table read in New York City assembled a full Broadway cast and garnered media attention as well as investor interest from the theater world, fueling heavy speculation that the production will soon be moving to Broadway.
A complete production of 'Rocket Boys The Musical' will be staged by Theatre West Virginia at their 1,260 seat Cliffside Amphitheater August 26th-September 4th. It will star Broadway and TV/film veteran Carl Anthony Tramon (Fame The Musical, Peter Pan, Saturday Night Live, Saved By The Bell) as the young Homer "Sonny" Hickam.
As the Broadway bound 'Rocket Boys The Musical' launches in West Virginia, the real Homer Hickam, who co-wrote the play, will be in attendance for opening weekend festivities to meet fans of his work.
The Resort at Glade Springs has teamed up with Theatre West Virginia to host a gala opening night party with special guests Hickam and the creative team behind the musical. Their Rocket Boy Premier Package will include lodging, reception, dinner and tickets to an opening weekend performance. Call (866) 562-8054 for more information.
Since retiring from NASA, Hickam has penned over a dozen best sellers in addition to 'Rocket Boys'. Both Homer Hickam and Carl Anthony Tramon, the Broadway veteran actor who will play him in ‘Rocket Boys The Musical’ are available for media interviews to discuss:
- The iconic back-story of the original Rocket Boys, and where they are today
- Why the Rocket Boys/October Sky story seems to touch so many people around the world
