The days after a major accident, like the ferry crash, can feel confusing and overwhelming for those who were there.

New York, New York (PRWEB) January 16, 2013

Around 70 people were injured, 11 seriously, after the Seastreak Wall Street commuter ferry crashed into a pier while docking. The ferry's captain said he was unable to put the vessel in reverse as it approached the dock, reported the Associated Press. Mechanical problems are one of the more common causes of ferry accidents, said New York personal injury lawyer David Perecman.

The collision occurred at the South Street Seaport during the morning rush hour. According to AP, the crowded ferry hit the pier at a high rate of speed. The impact tossed passengers around the vessel and ripped open the boat’s hull.

A day after the accident, the captain of the ferry was interviewed by National Transportation Safety Board investigators for three hours, said AP.

The investigation will also include the documentation of pier damage, an examination of the ferry's maintenance records, an interview with the ferry's engineer, and an inspection of the vessel out of the water. Apparently, the ferry had undergone a recent and major overhaul that gave it new engines and a new propulsion system, said AP.

People who were injured in the ferry accident should speak with a lawyer as soon as possible, advised Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York’s personal injury law firms.

“The days after a major accident, like the ferry crash, can feel confusing and overwhelming for those who were there," said Perecman. "But it is important for them to know what their rights are and what information should be collected and documented.”
