Mayor Bloomberg Joins New York Nativity in Honoring Jesuit Middle School Education for Underserved New Yorkers
New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appears before supporters and alumni at fundraiser benefiting pioneering network of Jesuit middle schools which help low-income students break cycle of poverty through education. Inspired by a 450-year-old Jesuit tradition of educational excellence, Nativity's success in transforming low-income middle school students into high school, college graduates, and community leaders has become the founding vision for over 60 "Nativity Model" schools in the U.S.
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 6, 2009 -- Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will honor New York Nativity, a network of Jesuit-sponsored middle schools, for nearly forty years' success in breaking the cycle of poverty through education. Mayor Bloomberg will be joining supporters and alumni at the 2nd Annual "Reach for the Stars" Spring Benefit celebrating New York Nativity's three middle schools - Nativity Mission Center on the Lower East Side, Brooklyn Jesuit Prep in Crown Heights, and Saint Ignatius School in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. The cocktail reception will take place on Wednesday, May 6th, from 6:30 - 11PM at the Tribeca Rooftop, 2 Desbrosses Street, in New York's Tribeca.
New York Nativity's innovative model of Jesuit-sponsored middle-school education for underserved New Yorkers is based on a comprehensive and rigorous academic program, extended school day and school year, and graduate support services for its students through high school. Its students achieve significantly better high school and college graduation rates than typically seen in the low-income communities Nativity serves. It has become the founding vision for over 60 "Nativity Model" middle schools around the U.S.
"By establishing middle schools, summer leadership programs, and support services for graduates of each Nativity Center, the organization is able to provide students the skills and assistance they need inside and outside the classroom so they reach their full potential and achieve their dreams," said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. "In addition," Mayor Bloomberg noted, "Nativity instills in its students the value of giving back to their communities, bolstering the importance of good works that lies at the heart of the Catholic tradition and proves a benefit for all New Yorkers."
"New York Nativity offers a unique program, based on a 450-year-old tradition of Jesuit educational principles, that helps low-income children reach their full potential and transform themselves from learners into leaders for their communities," said Rev. John J. Podsiadlo, S.J., President of New York Nativity. "Our supporters and alumni are partners in our mission to break the cycle of poverty and strengthen New York's families and communities through education. We are honored that Mayor Bloomberg will be joining us to celebrate our commitment to young New Yorkers."
