Independent travel agents A1Travel have seen a surge in bookings for North Africa destinations that have escaped, or have recovered from, the 2011 Arab Spring upheavals.
The current political turmoil in Egypt has led to much greater interest in more stable destinations in the region - including Tunisia and Morocco in North Africa, as well as the more main stream destinations of Cyprus and the Canary Islands - all of which are proving popular in advance winter bookings.
A1Travel have also seen a surge in bookings for Marrakech in particular, as the Moroccan city is currently the only non-beach holiday destination for which all-inclusive bookings are available. This combined with the Egyptian upheavals have seen A1Travel's Marrakech bookings double year-on-year.
Destinations close to the equator offer year-round warmth, while for Britons, North Africa delivers both beach and city breaks without the inconvenience of a long-haul flight. The nearby Canaries can also be reached in around four hours, even from airports in the north of England.
It's not only sun-seekers who could find North Africa attractive though, as city destinations like Marrakech make excellent year-round options for culture vultures.
Nick Lima from A1Travel said: "While holidaymakers have been put off visiting Egypt by the on-going troubles there, North Africa is still a popular winter sun destination. Coastal Egyptian resorts remain unaffected by the upheavals, but near neighbours Tunisia and Morocco are good alternatives too.
"We all long for some sun and warmth in the depths of winter, and North Africa offers both in abundance for British holidaymakers. With early booking offers already available for summer 2014, we expect to see another busy year ahead."
