Todd Burpo, a 1991 graduate of Oklahoma Wesleyan University, will speak on April 14 at 7:30 pm in Lyon Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the campus of Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, OK. His New York Times #1Best Seller, “Heaven is for Real”, has become a phenomenal success.

“Heaven is for Real” is the true story of the Burpo family and their four-year-old son who, during a life-threatening illness and emergency surgery, slips from consciousness and enters heaven. In 2003, Colton’s burst appendix led to an aggressive infection. He narrowly survived. Several months later, Colton began talking about his experiences during surgery and his trip to heaven. The family didn’t know what to believe, but soon the evidence was clear.

This inspiring story gives the reader a glimpse into heaven through the eyes of a young boy. Though skeptical at first, parents Todd and Sonja came to realize that more occurred during surgery than ever expected. Colton began to recount his journey to heaven, including descriptions of people met while there: a great grandfather who had died 30 years earlier; a sister that was lost through a miscarriage; and Jesus himself. Colton was also able to accurately describe his parents praying for him in separate rooms at the hospital during his surgery and he related that it was at the hospital that the angels sang to him.

Written in the first-person narrative of Colton’s father, Todd, and by New York Times best-selling author Lynn Vincent, “Heaven is for Real” walks readers through the revelation of Colton’s trip, his parent’s initial uncertainties, and the lessons learned by such a small child. Since its release in November of 2010, the momentum for sales has surpassed all expectations. Over one million books have now been printed.

“It has been incredible to watch the contagious enthusiasm of readers drive the success of 'Heaven is for Real',” said Michael Hyatt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Nelson Publishers. “Colton’s story gives a wonderful glimpse into what lies ahead for believers, and encourages us to embrace our childlike faith.”

“Heaven is for Real” hit the New York Times Best Seller list on December 5 and went to number one on January 23. Never would the Burpo family have expected to be sharing their incredible story through the publication of a now New York Times Best Seller. Yet, Colton’s challenging and terrifying near death experience has impacted the entire family and those who interact with this inspiring story.

Todd Burpo and his wife Sonja Selfridge Burpo are 1991 graduates of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Todd is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, NE and a volunteer fireman. Sonja is a children's minister, busy pastor's wife, and mom. Colton, now an active eleven year old, has an older sister Cassie and a younger brother Colby. The event is free to the public.
