The Physical Therapy Business Alliance (PTBA), an independent association of physical therapy businesses, has issued funds to The Foundation for Physical Therapy to support the investigative research study - Influence of Physical Therapy Referral Characteristics and Practices on Quality, Cost Effectiveness, and Utilization Patterns.
The goal of the funding opportunity is to gain a better understanding of how physician self-referral arrangements impact access to evidence-based care, health care costs, and the future of the physical therapy profession.
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has long opposed referral for profit arrangements because of the inherent conflict of interest they present. The PTBA is in alliance with the APTA’s position and recognizes the timeliness of this research. “Health care reform discussions have resulted in a close examination and detailed scrutiny of practice arrangements that increase utilization, drive up costs, and limit patient access,” states PTBA Chairman Carl DeRosa PT, PhD, FAPTA. "With data mining research techniques now available coupled to an emerging era of cost containment mandates, the opportunity has never been greater to capture the essential data needed to examine fully the clinical and business impact of referral-for-profit arrangements. As an industry voice, PTBA strongly supports the independent Foundation for Physical Therapy’s efforts to gather evidence and examine this high priority and timely issue."
Several businesses and organizations related to the physical therapy industry, including Evidence In Motion and The Private Practice Section, joined the PTBA in awarding funds to support the Foundation’s $350,000 research grant. The Foundation is currently collecting applications from health services research teams to conduct this important study. Interested parties are invited to visit the Foundation website for application requirements and detailed information.
