(Vocus/PRWEB ) May 12, 2009 --

WHAT: With summer around the corner, media are invited to join The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation for an event kicking off the department's summer youth programs. Given today's uncertain economic times, Parks and Recreation resources within local communities are more important than ever, as they provide low-cost recreational programs that keep youth learning and playing in safe environments over summer break.

In particular, at the media event, the Department will introduce Safe Summer, a FREE late-night recreation program that is expected to serve upwards of an additional 25,000 youth at locations around the county this year. From June 22 to August 22, more than 25 community facilities will be open from 10 p.m. to midnight to provide teens and young adults with places where they can hang out with their friends, explore new recreational pursuits, and learn about keeping themselves and their communities safe.

WHO: M-NCPPC Prince George's County Planning Board Chairman Samuel Parker, Jr., and Parks and Recreation Director Ronnie Gathers will host the event. Invited county leaders and local athletes include:

  • County Executive Jack B. Johnson
  • Marissa Coleman, Washington Mystics guard-forward and University of Maryland NCAA Division I women's basketball standout
  • Tia Bell, forward for the NC State NCAA Division I women's basketball team and former nationally ranked player for H.D. Woodson High School in Washington, D.C.
  • Kalika France, professional basketball player in Finland, former University of Maryland guard and Parade All-American player for Bishop McNamara High School in Forestville, Md.

Media will also have the opportunity to interview youth, families and community members who have participated in various summer programs.

WHERE: Temple Hills Community Center, 5300 Temple Hill Rd., Temple Hills, Md.

WHEN: Monday, May 18, 2009 from 6 to 7 p.m.

VISUALS: Youth and teens participating in Safe Summer and other recreational activities, including line dancing, a cooking class, basketball games and steel drumming.
