In his latest blog post at http://www.perwickstrom.com, entrepreneur, author, speaker and drug treatment facility CEO Per Wickstrom is focusing on how to handle the departure of a key employee.
“While it’s ideal to have plenty of notice before a key employee leaves, often this isn’t the case and some employers are fortunate to get even a couple of week’s notice – though it can be a matter of days” commented Per Wickstrom. “Whatever the reason, employers need to know how to handle this inevitable human resource issue before it happens – not during or after – and that’s why this latest blog post is so important.”
According to Per Wickstrom, employers who are faced with the sudden departure of a key employee should focus on the following:
- Determine if another employee can temporarily assume some or all of the tasks while a replacement is sought.
- If possible, have the departing employee put in writing the nature and dynamics of their role (obviously this may not be feasible if the employee is not leaving on good terms)
- Perform a security audit and ensure that the departing employee returns all keys, access cards and so forth. Also speak with IT to limit or eliminate their access as necessary.
- If legally appropriate, remind the departing employee of their obligations with respect to any non-disclosure or non-compete agreements.
“Ultimately,” added Per Wickstrom, there’s no turning back the clock and an employee who has decided to leave is typically not one that an employer wants coming back under any circumstances – not because it pays to hold a grudge, but because re-building trust may be impossible; especially if the employee held a key position. As such, employers need to view the situation objectively and take swift and pragmatic steps to do what’s best not just for the organization, but for the individual employees who are not leaving. The negative impact on them should be minimized and, ideally, it may even present opportunities for advancement and growth.”
