Las Vegas, NV (Vocus) August 12, 2010
Kerry Painter of Henderson and David Haynes of Las Vegas rolled a final-round 481 Sunday to capture the Professional Bowlers Association West Regional Junior/Senior Doubles at the Virgin Bowling Center.
Painter bowled final round 233 while Haynes had a 248 for the total of 481. Dawson had a 196 and Haggerty a 211 for the runner up finish.
The pair, which came into Sunday’s action seeded No. 2, knocked off the No. 1 seed of Southern Californians Ty Dawson and P.J. Haggerty, who recorded a score of 408.
Painter averaged 220 while his partner Haynes averaged 229 en route to the victory which paid each bowler $1,500. Bowlers from California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and Illinois competed.
Painter immediately packed his belongings in his truck for a 1,700-mile trek to Hammond, Ind., and his next event which begins Tuesday.
“The event at the Virgin River was super,” said Painter. “The people of the Virgin River treated us great. The hospitality was excellent and I really liked the $1 beer.”
Painter said combining with Haynes was ideal adding ‘We have bowled together several times, and we have faith in one another.”
Painter is a retired McCarran Airport air traffic controller while Haynes owns a pro bowling shop with his wife, Dottie.
Third place went to Marv Sargent of Temecula, Calif. and Ben Laughlin of Phoenix; while fourth place went to Noel Vazquez of Sacramento, Calif. and Tim Porritt of Anaheim, Calif.; and fifth went to Howie Partell of Las Vegas and John DeBenedetta, Jr. of Henderson.
Professional bowler Wendy Macpherson, who served as a commentator for the event, also lauded the tournament.
“I think it was great,” said Macpherson. “You very rarely get the chance to see a televised regional event. I know I have never seen it.”
Macpherson said the fact the event was being filmed for future television created another interesting element.
“As a bowler, your heart beats a little faster when there are television cameras around,” she said. “You’re nervous.”
Macpherson said the addition of a PBA event in Mesquite was excellent for the city.
“There has been nothing but positive about this event,” she said. “Mesquite is a great city and it’s nice to see the PBA come here.”
“The bowlers were very happy the way the tournament was run and we will do our best to bring them back next year and from then on,” said Virgin River Bowling Center Director Gary Higashi. “The last time we had a tournament here was five years ago.”
A total of 48 bowlers competed in the Professional Bowlers Association regular/seniors doubles championship. The tournament began Friday, Aug. 5 with a Pro-Am event.
