Pryor, President and CEO of SBLI USA Mutual Life Insurance Company, Inc., was awarded Bronx Community College’s coveted Presidential Medallion following her delivery of BCC’s 48th commencement speech on Friday, June 6, 2008. A former student of BCC, Pryor delivered a riveting speech to an audience of more than 3,000; graduates, friends and families. “BCC is a beacon of hope for our future, and you are its children, its progeny,” she continued with, “Dream big, lead with your values, serve others, never give up, and follow your heart.”
Of the distinction of receiving the Presidential Medallion Award, Pryor said, “I am deeply honored that BCC, one of the finest colleges in the country, has bestowed upon me its highest award of achievement.” She went on to say of BCC, “BCC is a values-based institution that leads its students to become better citizens and make valuable contributions to their communities.”
Pryor joins an impressive list of notable Presidential Medallion recipients including: entrepreneur and civic leader, Elias Karmon; Pulitzer Prize winner, Oscar Hijuelos; tennis legend, Arthur Ashe; congressman, Jose Serrano, philanthropist, Lewis Rudin; and author and actor, Malachy McCourt.
Pryor, no stranger to achievement, has always dreamed big herself and led with her values. Born on the west side of Chicago in a challenging neighborhood, Pryor learned early on to turn challenges into opportunities. She put herself through school to earn a B.A. degree magna cum laude in 1975 and a Juris Doctorate in 1978 from the State University of New York at Buffalo. In 1989, working full-time, as a single mother, she earned an MBA degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a CPA, CLU and ChFC and is admitted to practice law in New York and Illinois. Pryor received an honorary doctorate degree from Sacred Heart University in 2004.
Pryor gives back in the name of education and empowerment, and in the name of her grandmother, Marie Nesbitt. Pryor has established the Marie Nesbitt Promise Prize, and to-date has personally awarded more than 14 financial awards to students who have proven exceptional academic achievement.
