The Retirement Industry Trust Association(RITA) today announced the creation of a new certification program for financial services professionals who provide custody services for self-directed IRAs.
The Self-Directed IRA Professional (SDIP) certification program is designed to provide additional training and education to industry professionals, enabling them to be more effective in helping retirement savers create wealth in IRA accounts that hold direct investments in real estate, private equity and other alternative assets.
"The Self-Directed IRA Professional Certification program is part of RITA's commitment to continually improve our service to American retirement savers," said RITA President Tom W. Anderson.
The first SDIP sessions will be held Oct. 3-5 in Phoenix. Participants can register at http://www.ritaus.org.
The new certification program was a result of discussions at RITA's annual conference held March 26-28 in Washington, D.C. More than 50 CEOs and executives of major self-directed custodians came to Washington to explore initiatives to encourage and support retirement savings. The conference, which coincided with RITA's 25th anniversary, featured speakers from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Securities Exchange Commission (SEC), North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), IRS, and the Department of Labor (DOL).
Discussions ranged from the latest trends in retirement savings to current anti-fraud initiatives being pursued by the various regulatory agencies.
Anderson stated "RITA and its members are working collaboratively with federal, state and private agencies on ways to provide more education to retirement investors, because ultimately an informed and skeptical investor is the best defense against fraud."
Over the past two years, RITA membership has increased due to the growing interest in alternative assets, new RITA marketing programs and the expansion of membership types to include regulated bank and trust custodians, IRA administrators, facilitators and interested industry professionals.
