Working with Retasure brings the latest in telemedicine to central Ohio and gives many more patients the ability to avoid severe vision loss.
"Canyon Medical Center and Midwest Retina are two of the region's most established and respected practices," said Scott Sanner, Senior Vice President for Digital Healthcare's North American Operations. "While we are thrilled to have both part of the Retasure network, the true beneficiaries here are Columbus-area diabetics."

Canyon Medical Center is an 11 provider practice specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics. "All of our physicians provide treatment to diabetic patients and understand their high risk for serious eye disease," said Stephen Canowitz, M.D. "We don't intend to replace the services of the ophthalmologist, but we do want to make retinal risk assessments more readily available to our diabetic patients."

The six Midwest Retina physicians specialize in treating vitreoretinal diseases across seven locations in central Ohio including Columbus, Chillicothe, Mansfield, Zanesville and Mount Vernon. Dr. Mark D. Lomeo will lead the practice's Retasure reading center.

"We believe that early diagnosis and preventative treatment are vital to preserving sight in the diabetic patient," said Dr. Lomeo. "Working with Retasure brings the latest in telemedicine to central Ohio and gives many more patients the ability to avoid severe vision loss."

The FDA-approved and HEDIS compliant Retasure program provides a simple, affordable, and non-invasive solution that allows physicians to capture their patients' retinal images during a three to five minute procedure. Images are transmitted over a secure, HIPAA compliant network to an accredited reading center. A state-licensed and board certified ophthalmologist reviews the images and results are returned to the original physician within 72 hours.

There are an estimated 20 million diabetic patients in the US, but only about half have any retinal assessments, despite a high risk of diabetic retinopathy. The National Eye Institute indicates diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness among working age American adults. More than a million patients around the world have received a retinal risk assessment using Digital Healthcare software.
