San Diego, California (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

Progressive Health Services is finding that women who have normal Pap smears results should still consider testing for HPV. Having a normal Pap smear result has traditionally been viewed as a sign of good health. However, even if a woman has a normal Pap smear she could still be infected with HPV.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the U.S. today. High risk strains of HPV, also called Human Papilloma Virus, are the leading cause of cervical cancer in women. High risk strains of HPV are also known to cause cancers in men- of the penis, throat and anus.

“We have seen a number of women with normal Pap smear results test positive for high risk cancer causing strains of HPV,” says Suzann Gage, OB/GYN nurse practitioner, licensed acupuncturist and clinical director of Progressive Health Services in San Diego, California. “We have been testing women for HPV, as part of a routine Pap smear, for quite a few years now with the HPV DNA test, and, more recently, using the new highly accurate HPV RNA test. Additionally, we are providing HPV testing for men as well.”

Gage continues, “A normal Pap smear result can give a false sense of security. Women want to know if they have HPV, and some women will requested HPV testing even if they have a normal Pap smear result. Knowing if you have HPV makes a difference. Testing positive for HPV can lead to early treatment, partner testing and the use of safer sex. There are a variety of HPV treatments available including integrative health care options. We have had good results utilizing conventional and alternative medicine strategies in addressing HPV.”
