Sellers Get an Evaluation for Southwestern Art
The first step in the process is to determine whether the southwestern art is suitable for the Santa Fe Art Auction. This can be done by arranging for a consultation with the SFAA specialist who will evaluate the southwestern artwork free of charge and in absolute confidence. (We do not work with furniture, stamps, coins, or firearms.)
If visiting our office is not convenient, it is possible to have a basic estimation done by mail or email. To attain a mail evaluation, sellers should print and fill out the online form for an art auction estimate request and mail it to us along with photos of the item(s). If sellers prefer to use email to expedite the process, please send the images with the estimate request to curator@santafeartauction.com.
Determine Estimates of Current Value of the Southwestern Art
Estimates reflect our expert opinion as to the current value of an individual item. The estimate, expressed as a low and a high dollar value, is determined by comparing the offered item to similar items sold in auction and other venues. Condition, provenance, and other factors are also used to evaluate the work. Estimates reflect the potential of the item but are no guarantee that the item will sell within that range at Santa Fe Art Auction. As is often the case, competitive bidding results in higher than expected results.
Define Terms and Conditions
Sales commissions, the amount we charge the consignor to sell the item, are based on the potential auction value of the property. Sellers should call Santa Fe Art Auction for commission rates. The cataloging and photography fee will be determined based on the number of southwestern art pieces consigned into the auction.
Set Auction Reserves
For each of the southwestern art items consigned, a minimum price called the reserve can be set by the owner, below which the property will not be sold. This reserve price will be held in strictest confidence. If bidding ceases before the reserve price has been met, the lot will be bought-in, or passed, by the auctioneer. In this case, the seller may have the property returned or may choose to re-offer it in a future auction.

Once we have a signed contract the promotion of the property begins. After being professionally photographed, the consigned property goes onto our website and into our full color print catalog.
