I was able to develop my flat sketching skills by participating in the contest. As a result, I believe that I could prepare for my portfolio for future contests and job interviews successfully.

This is the second year that the contest is being held, and Sanyo plans to make it an annual event, with the goal to support college students studying fashion design. Last year’s winner and contestant, Bobae Kim, recalls her experience as being broadening, by trying to understand the philosophy of the Sanyo collection and researching its products. “For the Sanyo Shokai project, I not only wanted to design the coat, which has my design DNA, but I also wanted to create a new combination of color, by applying the new color trends, as well as reflecting on the color preferences of men. I am still trying to figure out how to balance between the two aspects harmoniously.”
Besides the chance to win $500, the contest provides a means by which students develop their ability to design for an established and respected brand. This type of experience is invaluable to a student when looking for his or her first job in the fashion industry. Without it, breaking into the business is much more difficult. Bobae Kim believes it to be a valuable experience to apply for contests, "I was able to develop my flat sketching skills by participating...as a result, I believe that I could prepare for my portfolio for future contests and job interviews successfully."
For this reason, Sanyo considers the experience gained by participating in the contest to be of tremendous value to the participants. And the company, in return, gains a fresh perspective on the Sanyo brand from the participants, offering their take on what a Sanyo coat should be.
“As a cutting-edge outerwear manufacturer, Sanyo is always looking for innovative ideas as well as new technology to improve its products. We believe in the next generation's creativity and new ideas,” said Chris Champlin, Sanyo’s Vice President of Sales. “This design contest is a great opportunity for students to show their passion for fashion.” Upon the close of the entry period, Sanyo in-house staff will judge the entries and ultimately select the design believed to be the best fit with the Sanyo brand. The winner will receive $500.
