When his daughter was diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, Dr. Marc Moramarco - a Woburn, MA chiropractor, with twenty-four years experience treating spinal conditions, went in search of a way to help her avoid surgery. In his search, he discovered the Schroth Method and his passion for helping those with scoliosis was sparked. In April 2002, he traveled to Bad Sobernheim, Germany to the Asklepios Katharina Schroth Clinic, a non-surgical inpatient facility dedicated exclusively to scoliosis. During that initial visit, he learned firsthand about the scoliosis exercises and rotational breathing techniques used in Germany for nearly ninety years.
Dr. Moramarco has returned several times since, and earned his certification in this effective technique in 2007. He immediately established Scoliosis 3DC (three-dimensional correction) and is now celebrating three years of successful Schroth Method instruction and has introduced adolescents and adults from twenty states and three countries to the benefits of controlling scoliosis via Schroth exercise.
The Schroth Method incorporates intensive, exercise and breathing techniques, crafted specifically for each individual, depending on the scoliotic curve pattern. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional curvature of the spine affecting an estimated 2-3% of the population.
Although scoliosis is not a curable condition, the load-altering protocols are designed to strengthen and balance the spinal musculature with the goal of halting curve progression. Other reported benefits are improved clinical assessments in vital capacity and chest expansion, reduction of spinal rotation, improved posture and appearance, reduced pain and overall well-being.
Especially promising is when adolescents are able to achieve curve reduction, as measured by Cobb angle, or successfully halt curve progression or decrease spinal rotation during a period of rapid growth. Cobb angle is the universal standard to measure the degree of spinal curvature on x-rays.
Recalling his experiences of the past three years, Dr. Moramarco states, “Bringing the Schroth Method to the US has been incredibly rewarding. I have had the privilege of working with many motivated and committed adolescents and adults who now experience the benefits of Schroth daily, including the feeling of empowerment it provides. These dedicated patients are continued proof that the Schroth Method is an effective way to manage scoliosis.”
The program at Scoliosis 3DC includes long-established Schroth protocols, and also adds state-of-the art Scoliologic® Best Practice techniques developed by Dr. Hans-Rudolf Weiss of Gensingen, Germany. Dr. Weiss has authored numerous articles and publications on scoliosis including, Best Practice in Conservative Scoliosis Care. He is the grandson of method originator, Katharina Schroth and son of Christa Lehnert-Schroth, P.T., author of the Schroth Method handbook, Three-Dimensional Treatment for Scoliosis, now available in six languages.
Dr. Moramarco reports that Dr. Weiss’ Scoliologic® program, including the Physio-logic® and 3-D Made Easy™ techniques, are an enhancement to the traditional Schroth exercises, making the program at Scoliosis 3DC the most comprehensive Schroth program available in the US.
