Middleburg, VA (PRWEB) January 19, 2010

Consignment and resale stores across the United States and Canada have joined hands to answer the call from former Presidents Clinton and Bush to donate cash, not gently-used goods, to Haitian relief efforts.

"Things like clothes are not helpful right now because there is nowhere to store them, no one to sort them, and it would be difficult to transport the items to Haiti,” states the American Red Cross in a January 16th press release on their website.

Joining the relief effort with "Sell 1 Thing for Haiti” , a public information and awareness campaign , shops are offering people that don't have cash to spare, a way to turn donations of goods they do, into cash, simply and easily.

"Pick 1 thing. Sell 1 thing. Donate the cash,” says Cynthia Broockman of The White Elephant in northern Virginia. "Turning stuff into cash is the service that we perform in our community. Participating shops would like to help! We'll sell your '1 thing', donate our commission and send your contribution to the group of your choice. You don't have to try and sell it on your own and remember to write the check.”

Some participating shops will also accept your "1 thing” by mail. A simple fill in the blank form is provided on www.sellonethingforhaiti.com .

The campaign recognizes many people are concerned about conditions in our own country as a result of the recession and are debating whether to get involved with Haitian relief because of our own troubles at home.

They offer a solution. Pick 2 things. Sell 2 things. Donate the cash from one to Haitian relief efforts. Donate the cash from the second to a local charity involved in helping your own community.

Most consignment and resale shops have a program for nonprofits to raise cash by selling goods contributed by their supporters. Groups promote the program to supporters. Supporters drop goods at the store to be sold. The stores handle the rest, usually including mailing the check.

Participating shops know there are other avenues available to consumers to turn their goods into cash.

"Whether you choose a consignment or resale store, eBay, Craig's List, Amazon - that's your choice. The point is that even if you don't have a lot of spare cash to donate, we all have just '1 thing' we can sell and then contribute the cash, however you do it," Cynthia Broockman, who initiated the effort says. "I just know from experience a consignment or resale shop works. You're less likely to follow through when the cash goes back into your pocket then when you're handed a check by a consignment or resale store, already made out to the charity of your choice.”
