New 50-Bedroom Ronald McDonald House Receives 100 Sleep Number® Beds
Minneapolis (Vocus/PRWEB ) June 5, 2008 -- Select Comfort® Corporation (NASDAQ: SCSS), the nation’s leading bed retailer, donated 100 Sleep Number® beds Monday in support of the newest Ronald McDonald House®. The donation included Sleep Number beds plus bedding accessories, to furnish the 50-bedroom Atlanta house near Emory University. As Ronald McDonald House Charities® “Official Bed Provider” since 2001, Select Comfort has donated more than 5,000 Sleep Number beds to date to Ronald McDonald Houses across North America.
“We are thrilled to receive Select Comfort’s generous gift of Sleep Number beds,” said Linda M. Morris, executive director of the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities. “This generous gift helps us provide much-needed and appreciated comfort to our families during their stay at this home-away-from-home.”
Sleep Number Beds Encourage Rest
Each year, thousands of families stay at the Ronald McDonald Houses while their children receive medical treatment at nearby hospitals. These family members frequently experience stress and anxiety that can disrupt sleep schedules, cause insomnia and provoke a greater occurrence of daytime sleepiness. It is during these stressful times that restorative sleep is needed most for recovery and healing.
“Watching a child struggle with a serious illness is difficult and exhausting, to say the least. Through our support of Ronald McDonald Houses, we hope to help families with sick children get a better night’s sleep so they have the energy they need during the day to be strong and supportive,” said Bill McLaughlin, president and chief executive officer for Select Comfort.
The Sleep Number bed uses patented air-chamber technology that allows the mattress to be quickly adjusted for personalized comfort on each side of the bed via a hand-held remote control. A Sleep Number is a number between zero and 100 which represents the ideal combination of mattress comfort, firmness and support for each individual.
More Sleep Number beds and various bedding accessories will be donated to Ronald McDonald Houses across the country this year. To date, Select Comfort and its employees have donated nearly 9,000 employee volunteer hours, and more than $1.5 million in contributions from employee payroll deductions and other fundraising activities. Select Comfort’s long-term goal is to provide a Sleep Number bed for each Ronald McDonald House bedroom nationwide.

Atlanta’s first Ronald McDonald House, the fourth in the world, located at 792 Houston Mill Road features 16 bedrooms and has hosted more than 24,000 families since opening in 1979.
This facility will close May 1 as the new 50-bedroom Gatewood Road Ronald McDonald House opens in June 2008. In June of 1994, the second house opened at 5420 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, which includes 11 bedrooms and has hosted more than 8,000 families.
