St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland (PRWEB) December 18, 2012
R & A chief executive Peter Dawson has defended the proposed changes to St Andrews Old Course for the 2015 Open Championship.
He has claimed hysteria has been generated in the media and insists that any alterations will stay true to the original design for the Old Course. He admits that the Old Course is a shrine of golf but deems it illogical that the course, being so old, can stay the same. The course has developed with minor alterations over the years and the importance is to preserve the strategy of the course and everything that it stands for.
Dawson said “The local reaction generally has been very supportive at least at club level. But you will always find people at St Andrews who say nothing should ever change, that the course is perfect the way it is. I quite understand that.”
The changes will be made in two phases, with some taking place over this winter and others next winter. Dawson said “The work involving the Road Hole Bunker is virtually finished. These changes are so 'major' they’ve been done in less than a week!” This appears to be putting the work being carried out on the Old Course into perspective.
Other initial changes to the course are extremely minor. The second-phase changes include removing a 'redundant' bunker on the right of the third hole and moving it beyond the current ones and creating undulations to the right of the fourth and sixth greens and the creation of a new bunker 25 yards short left of the ninth green.
