StartupNation Announces Top 20 Dorm-Based Businesses for 2008

From Virginia to Ohio and California, Leading Collegiate Entrepreneurs Are Recognized for Business Achievement

San Francisco, Calif. (PRWEB) September 29, 2008 -- StartupNation (http://www.startupnation.com) has announced the results of its inaugural Dorm-Based 20, which ranks America's most outstanding collegiate entrepreneurs and the businesses they run. Winners were chosen from a cross section of collegiate entrepreneurs who submitted themselves for consideration.

"In compiling the final list, we identified three basic groups of these outstanding young entrepreneurs," said Rich Sloan, chief startupologist from StartupNation. "There were those whose current businesses have huge upside, those who leveraged a personal talent as the basis for a business, and those who demonstrated great strength in adhering to business fundamentals, which bodes well for their future as entrepreneurs."

Winners include rising stars like Andy Tabar at Belmont University, creator of Bizooki a social business-networking site that aims to connect people around the world together on potential projects. His site helps people collaborate on work projects from far away. Anywhere there's internet access, as Tabar sees it, Bizooki will be at the ready to tie team members together.

The 21-year-old Tabar started building Web sites at age 11. By the time he was 14, he turned a profit. Now, the incoming senior in Nashville, Tennessee makes just shy of six figures and has people working for him as far away as India.

And then there's Magician Jared Sherlock, who was chosen for his extraordinary talents in marketing and magic. He's a professional magician and is on his way to the bigtime, following in the footsteps of celeb magicians like Criss Angel and David Blaine. Sherlock is a freshman at St. John's University in Minnesota.

While the results are in for the Dorm Based 20, StartupNation is currently conducting the second annual "Home-Based 100" in conjunction with Microsoft Office Live Small Business (http://www.smallbusiness.officelive.com) to find the top home-based businesses in the country.
