Halloween Surprises For Houston-Area Retailer

Steelz finds consumers changing perceptions, spending habits for Halloween.
The biggest surprise this year is not that people are spending on Halloween decorations – it’s how people are spending that surprises us

Houston, TX (PRWEB) October 9, 2007 -- Nationwide, home decor retailers are gearing up for another big ‘Halloween Season’ – and with good reason. Last year’s record Halloween taught retailers that consumers are willing to spend for the fall holiday. But, as one Houston-area decor retailer explains, consumers are also changing how they spend for Halloween.

“Halloween is growing,” explains Cynthia Ruland, Senior Marketing Analyst for Steelz, an upscale Houston-area home decor retailer. “According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween was the sixth-biggest holiday for retailers last year. And so it’s no surprise that Halloween decorations have become a big deal, too. If you’re going to throw a Halloween party, you’ll want to decorate your home. If you’re going to hand out candy, you’ll want to decorate your yard. Buying decor for Halloween just makes sense.”

The National Retail Federation (NRF) anticipates that almost half (47.8%) of all Americans will decorate their home or yard this year, spending 1.39 billion dollars on Halloween decor - up slightly from 1.31 billion dollars in 2006. “The biggest surprise this year is not that people are spending on Halloween decorations – it’s how people are spending that surprises us,” says Ruland. “At our store or on our website, people are buying nicer Halloween decor than they have in the past. Just like at Christmas, we’re seeing more and more demand for our handmade, artful, grand-looking heirloom-style pieces that people can store and then reuse year after year. In many ways, Halloween is turning into a sort of second Christmas for us, and we’re very excited.”
