Harlingen, TX (PRWEB) June 17, 2009
Marine Military Academy (MMA), located in southern Texas on the Gulf Coast just 40 miles from South Padre Island, is now enrolling for this year's one-of-a-kind four week boys Summer Camp session. The Camp begins Saturday, July 11th, and wraps up on Saturday, August 8th, with Graduation.
During the four week session of physical fitness and military summer camp training, young men (ages 13-17) from all over the globe will discover the power of teamwork, the importance of respect for self and others and build the confidence to achieve the impossible. They'll learn about loyalty, leadership, manners and perseverance from those who know the true meaning of these words - former United States Marines and Cadet Instructors from MMA's academic program who are hired to assist the Drill Instructors (DI's). Campers are challenged age appropriately.
MMA Summer Camp activities are designed to increase the physical and mental confidence of each camper. Whether he's awkward or athletic, each young man learns that his reach should and can exceed his grasp. Each day begins promptly at 6:00 a.m. and in just ten minutes, every camper makes his bed, gets dressed and falls into formation to begin a morning physical fitness routine. Military Activities are an integral part of each camp: Marine Corps-style obstacle and mud courses, rappelling tower, paintball, rifle range, pugil stick bouts, hikes, rock climbing, and close-order drill. The ultimate team challenge, the "Iron Man" event, combines individual and team competition requiring campers to negotiate eight to ten physical obstacles including the obstacle and mud courses, paintball competition, fireman's carry, rifle range, and other events located throughout campus - the same course used by local Marine Reservists for training.
Valuable lessons are learned on MMA's 40-acre Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) complex. The LEAD complex comprises a series of team problem solving obstacles designed to increase confidence, build teamwork and improve the level of agility. Afternoon Team Sports competition includes flag football, soccer, softball, dodge ball, volleyball, swimming, circuit weight course training and basketball, just to name a few.
During MMA summer camp sessions, a growing number of campers have added the popular AIR WING Aerospace course to their list of activities. For an additional fee, campers can learn what it takes to earn a private pilot's license, start a flight logbook and acquire five hours of flight instruction at the controls of an actual aircraft, a well as an introduction to the world of aviation. Flights are conducted under the supervision of a certified AIR WING flight instructor in a safe and controlled environment, and all camper age groups can participate.

Applications for camp admission are accepted until the camp is full (approximately 300 campers). The total cost for Summer Camp 2009 is $3,750 and includes application fee, uniforms, room, board and activities, with the exception of the Aerospace elective at an additional cost of $1,200.
MMA is also a one-of-a-kind college preparatory boarding and U.S. Marine Corps military-styled academy for young men 13-17 years of age, with one year optional postgraduate study. The school was founded in 1963 by William A. Gary, rancher and retired U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Reserve Captain, who believed USMC concepts of leadership and discipline are adaptable to prep school education. In 1965, he and a group of retired Marines opened the school in Harlingen, TX on a 142-acre site of a former Air Force navigation school. The goals for personal excellence extend through academics, athletics/physical activities, moral and other personal endeavors. This year there were approximately 300 cadets enrolled in grades 8 through 12 with one year available for postgraduate study. Cadets in the 2008-2009 academic year originated from 26 different states and Australia, China, Ireland, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Taiwan, and United Kingdom.
