The Syrian Expatriates Organization (SEO) deplores the recent call of Al-Qaida's chief Ayman Al Zawahiri "urging Muslims to help Syrian rebels" as reported by Reuters. SEO considers it a futile attempt by Al-Qaida to exploit the peaceful grassroots Syrian revolution and cautions of its potential chilling effect.

Dr Mazen Hassan, SEO co-founder said, "It is because of the continued escalation of violence, the absence of security, and the chaos inflicted by the Assad government on the Syrian population that fringe elements such as Al-Qaeda, are attempting to infiltrate. This is playing into the hands of the Assad regime to further its conspiratorial claims that foreign fighters are attacking the country."

The SEO firmly believes that the Syrian revolution has grown out of the people's determination to rid the country of tyranny and extreme ideology. SEO and the Syrian people will continue to demand nothing less than a democratic and pluralistic Syria for all Syrians and rejects any group that would seek to exploit the Syrian Revolution for other purposes.
