Thompson, Conn. (Vocus) March 30, 2010
This week TEEG will join nonprofit organizations from around Connecticut in participating in CT Nonprofits Week at the Capital.
TEEG, which provides programs in community services, early education, prevention, senior outreach and volunteer opportunities in Northeast Connecticut, hopes that their presence at the week-long event will help to educate both policy makers and the public on the important missions of nonprofits and of the critical need for continued state funding.
“In this time of declining state revenues and increased needs, it is more important then ever that policy makers understand the cost effectiveness of programs offered through the nonprofit sector,” says Donna Grant, TEEG Executive Director, “There is a critical need for continued state support of the work done by nonprofits. It’s the most financially prudent thing that our legislators can do.”
State dollars are the foundation that give nonprofits the ability to leverage funding from local communities. For every state dollar TEEG receives, the agency is able go out and raise money to match or exceed that amount. “State funding is our foundation,” says Grant. “The loss of this funding would significantly reduce our capacity to leverage community dollars and meet the increasing needs of our community.”
The number of people served by TEEG has tripled over the last four years. And though community donations have also increased, the rise in donations doesn’t equal the increase in costs to accommodate the greater need for services. TEEG fears that if the state continues to cut funding to nonprofits, the number of those who benefit from their programs would be severely reduced.
CT Nonprofits Week at the Capitol takes place from March 29th – April 2nd on the concourse between the Legislative Office Building and the State Capitol Building.
