In spite of the uninterrupted prosperity from 2004 until 2008, the main characteristic of the transition period in South-East European countries has been negative for the majority of the population. In his new book, Tahir Mahmutefendic analyses, in detail, the economic performance in the region after the fall of communism and sheds light on the possible reasons for a widespread disappointment with transition.
Yugoslavia-born Mahmutefendic has held a fascination for South-East European countries. “Economic Performance in South-East European Transition Countries after the Fall of Communism,” a product of this interest, paints a portrait of the Balkans during the transition era, a time that produced some winners and many losers. Here, Mahmutefendic reveals why at least 80% of the people in the South-East European countries think that life was better in the ancient regime.
Incisive and eye-opening, “Economic Performance in South- East European Transition Countries after the Fall of Communism” is a must-read for economists, scholars and students interested in the true picture of the harsh realities that South-East European countries are facing.
