A highly collectible King Ranch saddle, never-published Pancho Villa photos and a very rare Pinched Frame Colt 45 pistol are featured items at the Frontier Times Western Auction of primary artifacts belonging to ranch cowboys of the past. Tom Burks, former curator of the Texas Ranger Museum and sale manager, has compiled hundreds of items from collectors across the country. The principal Old West artifact auction is being held in Austin, Texas on July 29th and 30th.

The rare antique western saddle from the world famous King Ranch is from the period of time when the Kleburg family, the original owners, ran the ranch. The ranch became the biggest in the world after the dissolution of the XIT ranch. A photo known to exist from 1910 shows Robert Kleburg sitting in a saddle that is exactly like the one offered for sale. Built to the King Ranch specifications, it has saddle pockets for fencing repair tools and the like.

Other highlights of the sale are an extremely rare Pinched Frame Colt 45 with a low double-digit serial number -- one of the first ever made -- and several never-published Pancho Villa photographs. One of those is an original hand-tinted photograph of Pancho Villa and his staff. Each man signed the back of the mount. Many are visibly armed.

The old west-themed auction includes antique firearms and saddles, Indian relics, western spurs, chaps, riatas and cowboy gear, a gun leather collection, western artifacts, western art, old west gambling items, a cavalry collection, and most anything else a cattle range cowboy would have needed.

“These old saddles are what a cowboy would pile on a green-broke bronc, not what some dude would put on a 'high school' horse,” said Tom Burks, who has spent plenty of his own life on horseback. “We have stuff that the old cowhands actually used, particularly as regards the spur collection,” said Burks. “There are classical western spurs and even an exotic South American spur collection in the auction.”

The real cowboy tools and gear include branding irons, hats, lassos, hobbles, batwing and shotgun chaps, other saddles like McClellans and A fork. Cowboy gambling items from the time consist of things like cheating dice, chuck-a-luck and antique playing cards.

Important firearms then and now, range from the pre-civil war muzzle-loading days to modern high-grade firearms such as a rare Winchester 66 musket and an 1847 percussion musketoon, Winchesters 73, 55, 42, 94, 02; Remingtons, Colts, Marlins, Kentuckys, hunting rifles, shotguns, a Beretta, a Winchester model 70 Classic, a Ruger No. 1 in 458 magnum, Weatherbys, Brownings and M.42 Winchesters.

The spurs in the sale, a standard part of a cowboy’s outfit, are by important makers such as Kelly, Crockett and Tom Johnson. Other styles are Chihuahua, Argentine, Chilean, Brazilian, Military, U.S. Army Cavalry and Renalde. There are Cavalry saddle cloths, saber straps, regalia, powder horns, flasks, bugles and boots. Period clothing such as Wild West Show, 101 Ranch and collectible H Bar C plus Texas Ranger Belt Buckle sets by Bohlin, Nelson, Ricardo, Sunset Trails and Vogt are included in items offered by collectors.

To complement the cowboy items, there are Confederate items, Indian relics, a German collection, taxidermy mounts, estate jewelry and fossils. The Indian items consist of Navajo rugs and saddle blankets, flint points, beadwork, Cheyenne dolls, Plains arrows, drum and dance items. The unusual German collection includes Imperial German helmets, swords, portraits of Wilhelm II, Hindenburg, and armor, and a 3rd Reich garrison flag. Also on the list are CSA Georgia Pike, CSA portrait photo, Bowie knives plus sabers such as Starrs, Ames, Spanish Colonial, French, Imperial German and British.

Unusual and highly collectible Old West court documents in the sale concern a runaway slave, a horse thief, a whorehouse and cattle brand registry in 1862. Other ephemeron includes trail drive documents, Texas maps from the 1800’s, charts, key pioneer cattle industry papers and books.

The early to modern artwork encompasses antique and vintage paintings, sculpture, carvings and original paintings from major contemporary western artists such as R. Morris Patterson and Clinton Baermann. The collection includes a large painting montage of a favorite onscreen cowboy, John Wayne, by artist Barry Leighton-Jones of London, originally commissioned by Ted Turner after he purchased film rights.

“We are making this more of a cultural event with original art from several eras, contemporary and antique collector items and western heritage pieces,” said Burks. “It will be an event.”

The sale is being conducted by auctioneers Frank L. Sughrue #6882, G. Shattuck #6128 and M. Davis #13351 from Austin, Texas. Sale location is the Ben Hur Shrine Ballroom at 7811 Rockwood Lane in Austin, Texas, 78757. Dates are Saturday, July 29th and Sunday, July 30th at 10:00am with inspection from 8:00am to 10:00am.
