Doe Run Donates $30,000 to Herculaneum Bicentennial Event

City of Herculaneum plans year-long celebration of its founding.

Herculaneum, Mo. (PRWEB) June 19, 2007 -- The Doe Run Company recently donated $15,000 to the Herculaneum Bicentennial Committee – with an additional $15,000 donation planned for November – to help fund year-long celebrations commemorating the founding of Herculaneum.

“We’re proud of our history in Herculaneum and pleased with the support we’re receiving from The Doe Run Company and other community members,” said Gene Thompson, who co-chairs the sponsorship committee along with his wife, Jo-Anne. “The city has earmarked $40,000 over the past four years to help fund this celebration and Doe Run’s sponsorship nearly doubles that amount. The company’s contributions will go a long way to underwriting events this fall and in 2008.”

Gary Hughes, Doe Run Herculaneum Smelting Division general manager, presented the first of two $15,000 checks to the Herculaneum Bicentennial Committee on May 21.

“We congratulate the city on this milestone and are pleased to be a part of the city’s history. We look forward to participating in festivities that will commemorate the past, celebrate the present and generate enthusiasm for the community’s future,” Hughes said.

Residents of Herculaneum will kick-off the 200-year anniversary this fall with a three-day celebration from Oct. 5 through 7. The event, organized by the Herculaneum Bicentennial Committee, will include entertainment, a carnival, craft fair, car show, food, beer garden and more. Additional events are planned throughout the following year, culminating with a three-day festival in October 2008. For more information about bicentennial activities, visit www.herculaneum2008.com.

Herculaneum was founded in 1808 by Moses Austin and Samuel Hammond. Nearly 80 years later, the St. Joe Company acquired a 540 acre tract of land along the Mississippi River to locate its new lead smelter. In 1890, construction began on the St. Joe Lead Company smelter, now the Doe Run Company’s Herculaneum smelter. For more about Herculaneum visit www.cityofherculaneum.com.
