The Huffington Post® recently proclaimed 2012 “The Year of One Direction,” as the British boy band exploded onto the music scene and ushered in a new “British Invasion” on the United States airwaves. It was more of the same on Ticket Liquidator, a leading secondary ticketing website, as One Direction out-sold all other events in 2012. The boy band beat out the second-highest selling event of 2012 on Ticket Liquidator, the smash Broadway hit The Book of Mormon, followed by Justin Bieber.

Consisting of members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson, the group was formed during the 2010 British TV singing competition The X Factor. After finishing third in the competition, the group was signed by Simon Cowell’s label Syco Records and was later signed by Columbia Records in the United States. With record-breaking albums Up All Night (2011) and Take Me Home (2012), One Direction remained at the top of the charts in the United States throughout 2012 with singles like "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Live While We're Young."

Despite beating out fellow teen-sensation Justin Bieber in overall sales on Ticket Liquidator, One Direction fans had to shell out slightly less than Bieber fans for a ticket. Justin Bieber tickets averaged $243.76 on Ticket Liquidator in 2012, while One Direction tickets averaged $199.12 for their 2012 tour and $171.45 for their 2013 tour.

Both Justin Bieber and One Direction tickets cost less than tickets for The Book of Mormon on Broadway, however. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s hit has taken the theatrical world by storm, leading all events in the top ten for 2012 with an average ticket price of $275.84. The Book of Mormon tour outside of Broadway, which plays in cities like Chicago, Ill. and San Francisco, Calif., has an average ticket price of $195.32.*
