President and founder of Dream Design Builders, Jay Riordan and his dedicated team of employees are starting off the New Year 2010 on a high note. The Rancho Bernardo-based home remodeling company received the prestigious 2009 Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics, as well as five San Diego Chapter National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) 2010 Contractor of the Year (CotY) awards for excellence in quality and craftsmanship.

Founded in 1987, Riordan’s company specializes in home remodeling in San Diego including, but not limited to, room additions, kitchens and bathrooms--as well as the special request custom home build. Dream Design Builders won their first BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in the category of five to 10 employees in 2007. Following the BBB “wait two years to enter after winning” criteria, Dream Design Builders once again entered the 2009 competition in the category of five to 10 employees. The company’s commitment to ethical practices in regards to management, employee, customer, vendor and supplier relations, is exemplified in Dream Design Builders winning the 2009 BBB Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics.

The BBB Torch Awards program is designed to promote not only the importance of ethical business practices, but also the willingness and efforts made by outstanding businesses to ensure that the marketplace remains fair and honorable. Dream Design Builders’ winning entry will be forwarded to the Council of Better Business Bureaus, the parent organization for the BBB network, for the international competition.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) invites contractors across the nation to compete locally for the prestigious Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards. Dream Design Builders won the CotY in the following five categories: Entire House $250,000 to $500,000; Residential Addition $100,000 to $250,000; Residential Addition under $100,000; Residential Kitchen $40,000 to $80,000; and Residential Kitchen under $40,000.

The San Diego NARI chapter accepted contractor entry submissions in over 25 categories for projects completed between July 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009. Contractors, from one-person shops to the largest remodeling firms strive to win a CotY award. Upon winning at the local level, Dream Design Builders’ winning entries move on to the regional and national level competition.

An impartial panel of judges made up of experts within the industry and associated fields selected winners based on “before” and “after” photography and project descriptions. The judges evaluated each project on a number of factors, including: how well the client’s expressed needs were met; enhancements to the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the existing structure; evidence of superior craftsmanship; innovative uses of materials and/or construction methods; and the contractor’s ability to overcome difficult obstacles.
