UK Travel Web Site Poll: Travellers Name Kazakhstan in Top Three European Countries They Most Want to Visit

The results of a recent poll by a popular travel Web site might have Borat exclaiming, "Kazakhstan...is nice...you like!"

(PRWEB) January 25, 2007 -- TravellersConnected.com , a free UK travel Web site featuring travel forums and travelling information, asked 2,800 gap year and long-term travellers around the world to name the European country they most wanted to visit. Incredibly, Kazakhstan , brought into the limelight by Sacha Baron-Cohen in his Golden Globe-winning performance as Borat, was the third most popular choice.

The overall winner was Italy with 22% of the vote, while the UK got a very commendable second place with 18%. Kazakhstan came in third with 16% - ahead of the likes of Spain (12%), France (10%) and Greece (7%).

Raw Data – Top 10 Choices

Country/Vote:
1. Italy - 22%
2. UK - 18%
3. Kazakhstan - 16%
4. Spain - 12%
5. France - 10 %
6. Greece - 7%
7. Turkey - 5%
8. Austria - 4%
9. Germany - 3%
10. Holland - 3%

Alastair Banks, one of the seven founders of the TravellersConnected travel Web site , gave his views on the result:

“It’s really quite fantastic what Borat has done to raise the public profile of Kazakhstan. For the country to get more votes than Spain demonstrates the sheer power of the media. When we compiled the same survey last year Kazakhstan barely got any votes at all!”

Alastair continues, “We understand that Kazakh president Nursaltan Nazarbayev thought that Borat had damaged the world’s perception of Kazakhstan. For the right reasons or wrong, it looks however that the film has really put the country on the map.”

TravellersConnected have since learnt that Air Astana has now put a third scheduled weekly flight into Almaty, Kazakhstan from London to cope with surge in demand.
