University Canada West Holds Fourth Convocation
Ceremonies to take place at Alix Goolden Hall on Saturday November 21, 2009
Victoria, BC (Vocus/PRWEB ) November 17, 2009 -- University Canada West, the only fully accredited Canadian university independent of government funding, announces its fourth convocation since its founding in 2004. The ceremonies will take place at the Alix Goolden Hall on November 21, 2009.

President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. David Strong comments: “University Canada West aims to be recognized for providing high-quality degree programs, using flexible delivery models and excellent academic resources.” He goes on to say: “Being entirely independent of government funding, but subject to the same government quality assessments as any university in British Columbia, we are in a unique position in the province to deliver post-secondary education in new and innovative ways."
Also at the convocation, the university will be conferring Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) degrees on the four outstanding citizens of Victoria who make up the Lafayette String Quartet (LSQ). These individuals are strong community supporters, and are highly regarded as musicians worldwide and as teachers at the University of Victoria School of Music.
Anne Elliot Goldschmidt, B.M. (Boston) Violin
Ann’s talent emerged early, and she received a full music scholarship to Boston University. She has become a musical leader wherever she has lived, including New Brunswick, Boston, Detroit, and Victoria. Ann has recorded numerous times for CBC radio both as a soloist and with the Lafayette String Quartet. Along with the many recordings of the LSQ, Ann and her mother have recorded Murray Adaskin's first Sonata for Violin and Piano (AdLar), and she has recently finished recording Beethoven string trios arranged for guitar with her UVic colleagues Alex Dunn, guitar, Lanny Pollet, flute and Joanna Hood, viola.
Pamela Highbau Aloni, B.Mus. (C.S.U., Northridge), M.M. (Indiana)
Born in California, Pamela recalls singing in church and following the black dots before she could read the words that she was singing. While an undergraduate she attended the Banff Music Festival and studied with the pre-eminent cellist, Janos Starker in his master class. Pamela credits this experience as the turning point in her career as a cellist – and the rest is history.
Joanna Hood, B.M. (San Francisco Conservatory of Music), M.M. (Indiana), Viola
Born in Oregon, Joanna grew up in Seattle. She has been a committed teacher since 1983, when she was associate instructor at Indiana University. In 1986, she taught viola at the Institute of Music and Dance in Detroit, Michigan, and served as artist-in-residence at Oakland University, in Rochester, Michigan. Along with the LSQ, she played with Paul McCartney and performed at Linda McCartney’s funeral service.
Sharon Stanis, M.M. (Indiana) Violin
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Stanis has appeared as soloist with the Victoria Symphony and the Palm Court Orchestra; and has served as concert master of the Victoria Symphony in the Summer Festival Series. In addition to the seven compact discs recorded with the LSQ, Sharon has recorded the Murray Adaskin Second Violin Sonata, the John Mills-Cockell Concerto of Deliverance, and the soundtrack of Criminal Acts by Tobin Stokes. She is the violinist in the theme music from the television show Bob and Margaret, composed by Patrick Godfrey.
University Canada West Chancellor Dr. Myer Horowitz adds: “All of our graduates deserve our congratulations, especially the ten who started their undergraduate studies at the university in the fall of 2005 and completed all of their courses with us. We thank Anne, Pamela, Joanna and Sharon for honouring University Canada West by accepting our honorary degrees.”
