The Coalition for a Democratic Syria celebrates the formation of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces and urges the international community to recognize this body as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.
The CDS embraces the election of Ahmad Moaz al-Khatib as president of the new National Coalition and of Riad Seif and Suhair al-Attasi as vice presidents. The CDS awaits the selection of a third vice president from the Kurdish community. The CDS further congratulates the newly elected leadership of the Syrian National Council, including its president Georges Sabra, and welcomes its membership in the National Coalition.
"These leaders represent a broad cross-section of Syrian society and should be recognized as the representative of the Syrian people, a privilege brutal dictator Bashar al-Assad has long since lost," said Dr. Yahya Basha, Chairman of United for a Free Syria, a Member Group of the CDS.
Among those governments that have already recognized the National Coalition as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people are France and Libya. The United States, European Union and the Arab League are expected to follow suit in the coming days.
