Breaking into a Career in Sports

Amherst, MA (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 4, 2009 -- Almost every child playing little league dreams of a career in professional sports, but very few actually achieve it. Career Connections, a program of the UMass Amherst Alumni Association, is bringing together a panel of alumni professionals who have been able to live their dreams and work in professional sports, taking place May 14, 7:30 - 10:00 a.m. at CBS College Sports Network in New York City. The panel will provide an invaluable opportunity to learn about numerous careers in sports and network with professionals currently working at all levels of the industry.

This must-attend event for anyone hoping to build a career in professional sports, hosted by CBS College Sports Network, includes alumni panelists Steve Cohen '89, general manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones; Steve Herbst '88, executive vice president and general manager of CBS College Sports Network and Dr. Sara Hickmann '04, director of player assistance services for the player development department at the National Football League. The panelists will discuss how they broke into careers in professional sports and what it takes to succeed in the industry.

"After graduating from UMass Amherst I attended the Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, TN set on going to law school," commented Steve Cohen, general manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones. "After receiving an internship opportunity with the St. Petersburg Cardinals, I decided to hold off on law school and headed to Florida for a 3-month internship that turned into a 20-year career!"

Dr. Sara Hickmann, who found her passion in professional sports, says, "As a former athlete, I learned that it requires persistence and dedication coupled with passion to stand out from your competitors. If you love what you do, it won't feel like work. For me, my career has become an extension of how I would choose to spend my time if I didn't need to work."

"As a passionate sports fan, I knew early on that I wanted to work in the sports industry," said Steve Herbst, executive vice president and general manager, CBS College Sports Network. "Working in sports is challenging and rewarding, and I'm thrilled to be part of a great team at this network, serving millions of college sports fans. It's a privilege to participate in this alumni panel and share my excitement."

Colleen Condon, the associate director for alumni career programs at the UMass Amherst Alumni Association, said, "The Alumni Association strives to deliver value to alumni by offering a variety of in-person and online career related events. UMass Amherst's sport management program is highly regarded, and this alumni panel is an example of how engaged our alumni are, sharing their expertise with current and prospective students, alumni and the greater community."

"We've added new programs and resources for our alumni to help them with the current economic and employment crisis," adds Condon. "In addition to programs like this one, the UMass Amherst Alumni Association provides an online career center for students and alumni, providing resources and tools for career development, career transitions and employment."
