Trinidad and Tobago (PRWeb UK/PRWEB ) June 17, 2009 -- The University of London External System is hosting two Open Days in Port of Spain on Friday June 26th and Saturday June 27th. University of London academics and admission staff are going to be on hand to give advice about the study programmes available in Trinidad and Tobago, and making an application.

There are currently over 3,500 students in Trinidad and Tobago studying for a University of London degree via the External System and others interested in joining them can either drop into the Long Circular Mall on June 26th or visit the Crowne Plaza hotel on June 27th. Along with University of London staff, representatives from local colleges which offer tuition for University of London programmes in Trinidad and Tobago are participating in the Open Day at the Crowne Plaza hotel. The colleges include the School of Business and Computer Science; Institute of Law and Academic Studies; K. Beckles Associates, Law Tutors; Academy of Tertiary Studies; and College of Legal Studies. The programmes they support range from undergraduate study in law, business, computing, economics, and geography to postgraduate study in banking, finance, law and management.

Also attending the event at the Crowne Plaza hotel is a panel of five University of London alumni, who are available to answer questions about their experiences of studying with the External System. Among them is Debra Coryat-Patton, an LLB graduate who now works for the US Department of State in Port of Spain.

Debra commented that "the University of London has a close affiliation with Trinidad and Tobago. A number of senior members of the legal fraternity here have successfully studied for a University of London LLB. The self-discipline that is required to undertake such a course and the ability to process and distil a large amount of information quickly in a concise and organised way, has served as the required foundation for my success and sustainability in my job."

Day 1: Friday June 26th
Time: 12.30-18.00

Notes for Editors

  • The University of London was established in 1836 and is one of the oldest, largest and most diverse universities in the UK. Its founding principle is to provide education for all, irrespective of race, creed or political belief.
  • In 1858 the University of London, through its External System, became the first British university to allow students to sit for its degrees regardless of where they studied.
  • Over 3,500 students are studying in Trinidad and Tobago for a University of London degree.
  • Former students and alumni include six Nobel Prize winners (notably Derek Walcott, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992) and The Honourable Arthur N. R. Robinson, the former President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • The University of London External System is a unique global network of 45,000 students in 180 countries, on more than 100 study programmes ranging from social sciences to law to health.
  • Between 1949-1969, University College of the West Indies awarded University of London degrees.
  • Through the External System higher education was made available to a much wider range of social classes; it pre-empted 20th century developments in open, flexible and distance learning by more than 100 years.
